There are several standard rules in composing your images. These rules are not hard and fast but should be observed as often as possible in your images. The first and foremost is: The photographic rule of thirds. As shown in the image below, the main part of the subject should end up in or near one of the four intersections (1/3rd into the picture).
It seems few people know this rule as about 90% of all the images have the subject's head right in the center of the picture. This happens because the auto focus sensor is located on the screen and people naturally look at the persons face. The end result is a poorly composed image with lots of space all around the subject.
